Swarnakatan – The Finest Malberry Silk

We can't give any historical evidences, but in Murshidabaad there is a folklore on a birth of a textile patronised by Murshidquli Khan. The folklore says Nasiri Begum, spouse of Nawab was not really happy with Baluchari as Baluchari didn't use any glittering yarn like Zari, so it's not as dazzling as other textiles of India who are famous for Zari.. According to Sir Jadunath Sarkar Murshidquli Khan was originally a Hindu brahmin born in deccan.. So he and his family got some exposure of Zari woven silk art of Southern India. Hence Begum asked something with Zari. On other way Begum already enjoyed Muslin, which is the finest possible textile under the sun. So with Zari she asked for a silk textile which is Very light in weight and extremely breathable like muslin.. So Nawab instructed the Royal weavers to full fill Begum's wish.

Again we can say it's a folklore but the existence of such textile is also supported by historian like Sushil Chaudhury.. Forget about the story, but the textile describes the glory of Bengal handloom. This is "SWARNAKATAN"... That means finest mulberry silk with gold.. We tried to revisit the history with limited resources...Hence feeling like Royal.
